Your future role
This is a varied role, and the successful applicant will be able to work under their own initiative as well as working as part of a team. The remit of this role is to ensure the safe and timely movements of rail vehicles whilst ensuring compliance with the Network Rule Book, and local operating instructions.
We’ll look to you for:
- Control of all movements of trains on depot, and road vehicle crossings to ensure the safe operation of the depot at all times.
- Operating the Depot Locally Operated Points System (LOPS) to move points and set routes as required and carry out resets on the system when failures occur.
- Operating the Signalling Panel to control the points & Signals at the South of the yard, as well as observing DY53 Signal at the north of the yard to accept train arrivals, and despatch train departures.
- Providing a daily Arrivals and Departures Sheet with the detailed information of units planned to arrive and depart at CZ, this needs to be kept updated throughout the shift as changes occur.
- Forming a plan for positioning the units in the yard area, taking into account the length of units and where they can be parked to depart in the correct direction, or stabled as required to stop on depot. Also being able to alter the plan as changes occur to maintain timely arrivals and departures.
- Updating the Train Tracker (Power App) with the location of units on depot, whilst using the movement sheet to record the details of units moved (time, unit number, driver and locations from/to).
- Ensure the safe protection of staff working in the yard area, outside of depot protection limits, but within the depot, and record line blocks accordingly. (Depot DP training)
- Control of T.O.C drivers, CZ depot drivers and Shunters when within the depot.
- Using good Radio Protocol with clear messages setting a standard for others to follow.
- Operating the train wash cycle (if required to do so).
- Liaising with Contractors and controlling possessions for infrastructure repairs and maintenance within the depot.
- Reporting any accidents, hazards, near misses or incidents that occur within the site.
- Drive and control rail vehicles as required within the depot – if trained and competent to do so.
- Use CCTV system to view units on depot
- Key contact with external customers and suppliers – Arriva and Avanti Train Controls via Alstom Planners, Network Rail Signallers, Trackwork and TOC Drivers.
- Being able to respond to Power Failures and knowing how to reset all of the systems on the Ops Desk.
- Act as Designated person for yard area (as defined)
- Controlling evacuation of TOC and Depot staff from units, and informing the Signaller of Depot Evacuation during Fire Alarms
- Application of supporting systems to access work instructions, learning modules, briefs, and risk assessments (not exhaustive)
- Accurately report status of operations, support inspections etc with the required level of detail.
- Understand and abide to safety notices, rules and regulations and follow safe working practices compliant with local standards.
- Comply with all EHS protection and AZDP measures.
