Senior Manager, VAT, Digital and Devices, Tax
London, UK
Description
Amazon is seeking an Indirect Tax Senior Manager to join the EMEA Digital and Devices Tax team in London, supporting the launch and growth of Amazon Leo's consumer business across Europe.
Amazon Leo is Amazon's low earth orbit satellite network, with a mission to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities beyond the reach of existing networks (https://leo.amazon.com/gb/en/). As Leo launches its consumer offering across EMEA, the successful candidate will lead the indirect tax position for the B2C business, working closely with Business, Engineering, Finance, Legal and external advisors to shape the tax treatment of Leo’s new consumer service from the outset.
The role will offer exposure to a broad range of jurisdictions and technical topics, including telecommunications services, bundled offerings of connectivity and hardware, design of consumer billing systems, place of supply for cross-border flows, and the interaction between indirect tax, direct tax, transfer pricing and accounting. There will also be scope for engagement with local tax authorities through enquiries and audits as they arise.
Key job responsibilities
The role provides indirect tax advisory support to the Amazon Leo consumer business across EMEA, covering the Leo satellite internet service, associated consumer hardware, and bundled or promotional offerings sold to consumers.
The role involves:
1. Leading the indirect tax position for the Leo consumer launch across EMEA, from strategy through go-live and into steady-state operation.
2. Advising on new features and product changes, including bundling of connectivity with hardware and other services.
3. Partnering with Leo business teams early in the product development cycle to ensure tax considerations are reflected in business requirements documents.
4. Working with Engineering to translate tax requirements into system logic, resolving open points and driving the testing approach to ensure a compliant launch.
5. Advising on customer-facing outputs, including invoicing, billing system design, pricing displays and customer communications.
6. Managing external advisors: setting the scope of advice, independently evaluating the output and reaching a sound position.
7. Handling engagement with tax authorities across EMEA, including audits, enquiries and informal engagement, in coordination with compliance colleagues.
8. Providing technical direction to more junior colleagues supporting the business line.
The role is primarily advisory, working closely with compliance colleagues on registrations, returns, audits and process improvements.
A day in the life
The role typically involves moving between three types of work. Advisory work with Product and Engineering on features under development, ensuring that tax treatment is understood, agreed and implemented before launch. Ongoing support for the live business, including advisor queries, positions to be documented, and questions raised by Finance or Legal. Ad-hoc work, including engagement with tax authorities, review of legislative changes across EMEA, and support for wider planning work across the digital services and consumer devices portfolio where relevant.
About the team
The team supports Amazon's digital services and consumer devices businesses across EMEA. The team advises a portfolio of businesses covering streaming (Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios, Amazon Music), digital content (Kindle, Audible), connected devices (Alexa, Ring) and now satellite broadband, and works directly with business teams and cross-functional stakeholders including accounting, legal, finance and tax. The team's focus is on providing clear, commercial and robust tax positions that allow the business to move forward with confidence, and on engaging early in the product development cycle to ensure tax outcomes are delivered at launch.
