Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We have a proven track record in the UK water industry and has secured roles on AMP8 frameworks with Yorkshire Water, United Utilities, Severn Trent Water, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Thames Water. Alongside this, we deliver a varied portfolio of work for the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, local authorities, contractors, developers and other infrastructure clients.

The Opportunity

Join Arup’s growing Water and Flood Risk team in Newcastle as a Water Engineer and help deliver projects that make communities, places and infrastructure more resilient to flooding, climate change and pressures on water systems. You will work on live UK projects from early assessment and option development through to detailed design and delivery, with opportunities to take meaningful responsibility and build your technical and professional skills.

Our work includes flood alleviation schemes, river restoration, sustainable drainage, hydraulic modelling, catchment planning, water supply, wastewater treatment and major infrastructure development. In Newcastle, you will join a supportive team with expertise across civil engineering, flood risk, drainage and water management, while also working with environmental, planning and digital specialists across Arup’s UK and global network.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for a civil engineer, who wants to use their skills to create practical, sustainable and resilient water infrastructure. You may already have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Flood risk management and flood alleviation
  • Drainage and sustainable drainage systems
  • River engineering, river restoration and catchment planning
  • Water supply, wastewater treatment or wider water infrastructure
  • Engineering option development, appraisal and detailed design

You do not need experience in every area or software package listed. We value sound engineering judgement, curiosity, a willingness to learn and the ability to work collaboratively. We welcome applicants from consultancy, contractor and public-sector backgrounds, including those with less conventional career paths.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, sharing knowledge and building strong relationships while contributing to live projects. With mentoring, access to Arup’s national and global specialists, and support towards ICE or CIWEM chartership, you will develop your skills across appraisal, design and delivery, with opportunities to grow in technical delivery, digital engineering, project leadership or a specialist area of water and flood risk.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Carrying out flood risk, drainage and water engineering assessments, analysis and design
  • Producing technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications
  • Developing and appraising options, feasibility studies and sustainable solutions
  • Supporting detailed design and project delivery
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, integrated outcomes
  • Engaging with clients, regulators and stakeholders through meetings and site visits
  • Using digital tools and specialist software for data analysis, modelling and design
  • Taking ownership of project tasks and ensuring quality and accuracy

What we’re looking for:

We are interested in candidates who can demonstrate a combination of the following:

  • Experience of civil engineering design or project delivery, ideally within water, drainage or flood risk management
  • Sound engineering judgement and an understanding of relevant standards, guidance and industry practice
  • Experience of one or more relevant tools, which could include GIS, Civil 3D or similar software
  • An interest in digital engineering, modelling and automation
  • The ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively with colleagues, clients and other disciplines

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification would be beneficial but is not essential
  • Progression toward or achievement of professional chartership (ICE, CIWEM or equivalent) would be advantageous
