PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
We are looking for a Senior Operations Engineer on a 12-month contract to support technology and systems used by our production colleagues in Lincoln and Sheffield.
You will be working in a live transmission environment where technical knowledge and problem-solving skills combined with a good understanding of IT systems and familiarity with consumer level technology will ensure broadcast continuity is always maintained.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
This is an exciting opportunity to work with a wide range of broadcast equipment and to enjoy getting hands on with organising, rigging and overseeing outside broadcasts and live events across the busy regions of Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.
BBC local radio has an audience of over 7.3 million people weekly and this is a chance to be part of that team with the opportunity to improve skills, knowledge and further career progression.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
• You will work between both sites in Lincoln and Sheffield, sharing the support in Sheffield with our engineer based in York, forming part of the wider BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire engineering team.
• As our sole on-site technical support, you will maintain a range of multimedia newsgathering, production, broadcast and IT equipment and offer technical advice to users.
• We have broadcast vehicles with technical equipment fitted and you will need to maintain them and perform quarterly checks to ensure their safe operation.
• There will be times when you are required to support building issues and consult with our facilities management partner.
• You will be working on a shift basis which is flexible but would normally sit between the hours of 8.00 to 18.00, four or five days a week. The role reports to the Operations Engineering Team Leader in Hull.
• The BBC has a reputation for providing world class training and there will be development opportunities to improve skills, knowledge and further career progression. This would include learning about our regional TV News operation in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, based in Hull.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE – KEY CRITERIA
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
Applicants should have spent some time working at broadcast engineer level and have the following core skills:
• Ability to understand a variety of broadcast and production systems in a multi-platform environment.
• Familiar with a range of diagnostic and monitoring tools and techniques used in troubleshooting and identifying faults.
• Ability to prioritise tasks according to service impact and to work calmly under pressure.
• Relevant engineering qualifications and practical experience.
• Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with colleagues from both technical and non-technical backgrounds.
• Some experience of working on outside broadcasts or live events.
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
