Job Description:
The Vice President of Structured Trade Finance (STF) Working Capital (CWC) is a senior leadership role within Finance & Risk in bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) organisation. Reporting to the SVP Finance, ST&S, the role holder will be a member of the Finance and Risk leadership team.
The STF team is responsible for designing and implementing tailored financing and credit‑risk‑transfer solutions that unlock trading opportunities, improve working capital, and directly enhance ST&S P&L—especially in complex, higher‑risk markets. Key responsibilities include structuring non-debt funding solutions by typically combining financing with risk distribution. These solutions are used to optimise working capital, extend credit capacity, and open up trading opportunities that would otherwise be constrained by balance sheet or credit limits.
The STF team acts as a commercial interface between traders, originators, credit risk, treasury, legal teams, and external partners including banks, insurers, and alternative capital providers. It directly supports P&L generation by improving traders’ commercial offers, enabling complex structured offtake and supply deals, and supporting growth in emerging markets. In addition, the team ensures the ongoing management (‘silent running’) of funding and credit-risk mitigation structures. It maintains robust controls, governance, and reporting to ensure liquidity stability. The STF function is global in scope, supporting refined products, gas, power, LNG, and energy transition-related trading activities across all regions.
This role oversees a globally distributed team, handles large structured and trade finance portfolios, sets strategy, and works with key partners to support commodity trade flows across trading.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone seeking the next step in their leadership journey. We are seeking a strategic, globally oriented finance leader with deep technical expertise in commodity finance. The successful candidate will have proven ability to balance business growth with disciplined risk management, and a track record of delivering tailored financing solutions in complex jurisdictions.
What you will do...
- Oversee and provide strategic direction to the globally distributed team of structured trade and trade finance specialists supporting bp’s commodity trading operations, ensuring the timely and safe execution of a multi-billion-dollar transaction portfolio—including both custom structures and standard bank guarantees. Foster a culture focused on continuous improvement through the implementation of robust processes and effective controls.
- Oversee the structuring, negotiation and execution of financing and external risk distribution solutions to support and expand bp’s trade flows, including trade credit insurance, receivable purchase agreements, risk participation agreements, prepayments, supply chain finance, transfer-of-ownership transactions, and other non-debt arrangements. While the main responsibility is for ST&S, specialists also provide their expertise to Treasury and the bp Group on transactions beyond ST&S.
- Build and lead enduring relationships with banks, investor market, and insurers – ensuring resiliency in our funding and risk distribution network. Identify and develop new relationships to expand credit risk mitigation and funding options – especially with regional banks and alternative providers.
- Manage ST&S relationship with its insurance broker and the trade credit insurance market. Oversee BP's reputation in the insurance market, maintaining BP as a preferred insurer for highly competed risk cover.
- Collaborate with Treasury to manage bp’s banking relationships, liquidity, cyber risks, and Letter of Credit (LC) facilities, including limits, pricing, and manage LC operations for the entire bp Group.
- Foster seamless collaboration across the business, including Trading, Origination, Credit, Treasury, Legal and other functional teams.
- Accountability for the optimisation of ST&S working capital, as well as associated controls monitoring. Drive transparency, rigour and enhancements through operational improvement and digitalization.
What you will bring…
- Extensive experience in trade finance or commodity finance and energy trading.
- Deep expertise in structured and conventional trade finance products (pre‑export, pre‑payment, inventory financing, receivable discounting, LCs, SBLCs, etc.).
- Strong understanding of commodity value chains, credit risk, international trade flows, and derivatives-related risks.
- Experienced in project finance or structured trade and commodity finance, with a sound understanding of the financial, processing, distribution and geo-political risks associated with energy markets
- Proven track record leading a global high performing team across multiple offices and managing multi‑billion‑dollar commodity finance portfolios.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and partnering skills, including ability to build enduring relationships with financial institutions and insurers and senior executives
