The Wells Operations Manager (WOM) is a senior leadership role within bp’s North Sea & Atlantic Margins Wells organisation, accountable for the safe, compliant, and efficient delivery of drilling, completions, workover, and intervention activities across the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and Atlantic Margins.
The WOM is the single‑point accountable role for day‑to‑day operations, with ownership of safety, well integrity, and delivery performance. The role ensures that all well activities are planned and performed in accordance with bp’s Operating Management System (OMS), Wells practices, and UK regulatory requirements, while fostering a performance‑focused culture to achieve top‑quartile safety and execution outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Risk & Operational Integrity
Lead the safe execution of all well activities in accordance with bp OMS, Wells Practices, Offshore Safety Case, and UK legislation (HSE, OPRED).
Act as the accountable duty holder for operational risk, including management of Major Accident Risks (MARs) and verification of well and barrier health across all phases of execution.
Systematically deliver process safety in wells operations, with strong focus on barrier management, human performance, and contractor assurance.
Ensure loss of well control preparedness, including emergency response readiness, work with bp Source Control capability, and participation in exercises where required.
Oversee and close‑out HSE, well control, environmental, and NPT incidents, ensuring high‑quality investigations, effective corrective actions, and learning shared across bp Wells.
Operational Delivery & Performance
Deliver drilling, completion, workover, and intervention operations in line with the agreed Statement of Requirements (SOR), approved programs, and asset delivery plans.
Ensure execution performance meets or exceeds schedule and cost commitments, with ownership of well delivery sequencing, AFEs, and operational cost control.
Act as Gatekeeper for Define/Execute and Execute/Review stage gates, confirming operational readiness prior to execution.
Provide operational input to well design, schedules, and cost estimates, ensuring plans are executable, risks are understood, and resources are appropriately aligned.
Drive NPT reduction and performance improvement initiatives, embedding continuous improvement and sharing lessons learned across rigs and assets.
Contractor & Supply Chain Management
Act as Contract Accountable Manager (CAM) for drilling and intervention rig contracts, accountable for contractor HSE and performance outcomes.
Oversee rig intake, upgrades, return‑to‑drilling, and start‑up activities, including verification of readiness and closure of assurance findings prior to operations.
Provide leadership to bp Supply Chain through pre‑tender qualification, bid evaluation, contract award, and execution, ensuring contracts support safe and efficient North Sea operations.
Manage service provider performance and delegate contract oversight to direct reports where appropriate.
People Leadership & Capability
Lead, coach, and develop Well Superintendents (WSUPs), Well Site Leaders (WSLs), and operations support staff, ensuring strong succession and capability depth.
Manage personnel deployment across multiple rigs and assets, balancing competence, fatigue, and operational demand.
Represent operations in capability, deployment, and discipline health discussions, supporting regional and global Wells workforce planning.
Foster a culture of visible felt leadership, field engagement, and strong onshore–offshore integration.
Assurance & Compliance
Ensure closure of actions from Rig & Vessel Assurance, Safety & Operational Risk Assurance (S&ORA), and regulatory inspections prior to start‑up or continuation of operations.
Verify emergency response organization readiness related to wells activity, including collaborate with asset IMTs and external agencies.
Maintain environmental compliance in line with bp standards and UK regulatory requirements.
Experience & Qualifications
Extensive years’ of experience in offshore well operations within the UK Continental Shelf ( UKCS ) or equivalent offshore basins.
Strong experience in drilling, completions, interventions, and rig operations, including multi‑rig or multi‑asset accountability.
Demonstrated leadership of diverse onshore and offshore teams in complex, high‑hazard environments.
Proven experience managing contractors, joint venture partners, and regulators.
Track record of coaching, mentoring, and developing operational leaders.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to operate effectively across engineering, subsurface, supply chain, and asset teams
