Job Description:
About the role
We are building something that has never been done before.
The Net Zero Teesside (NZT) and Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) projects will create the UK’s first full-chain, commercial-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) network, helping decarbonise some of the most carbon-intensive industrial clusters in the country. At full scale, this system could capture up to 23 million tonnes of CO₂ every year, playing a critical role in the UK’s 2050 net zero ambitions.
As we move into the next phase of development, we are looking for a Senior Environmental & Social Advisor to lead the offshore environmental and social scope for NEP Expansion. This is a first-of-a-kind project, which means you will be helping shape how regulation, engineering and delivery come together for CCS in the UK.
You will work at the interface of engineering, regulators and partners to secure the approvals that make the project possible—while ensuring we deliver responsibly, safely and with long-term environmental value in mind.
Key Accountabilities
In this role, we will rely on you to:
Lead the offshore consenting strategy for NEP Expansion, ensuring we secure all required permits and approvals in line with project milestones
Manage the preparation and submission of up to three offshore Environmental Statements, working closely with specialist contractors and technical teams
Build strong, credible relationships with UK offshore regulators (including OPRED) and statutory consultees, representing bp and its partners in a complex and evolving regulatory landscape
Work closely with engineering teams to ensure environmental requirements are embedded into pipeline and subsea design—particularly where the route interacts with sensitive areas such as Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) and Special Areas of Conservation (SACs)
Support the development of UK ETS-compliant monitoring and measurement solutions for subsea CO₂ systems
Collaborate with the onshore project team around landfall interfaces and consenting dependencies to ensure alignment across the full CCS chain
Engage with industry forums and CCS working groups, sharing lessons learned and helping develop emerging standards
Ensure bp’s environmental and social requirements are implemented consistently across project and contractor activities
Champion bp’s sustainability seeks across the project, including biodiversity considerations and opportunities for environmental improvement offshore
Chip in to assurance activities, including self-verification and oversight programmes, to maintain strong regulatory compliance and continuous improvement
Crucial Education and Experience Requirements
We are looking for someone who brings both strong technical grounding and the ability to influence in a sophisticated project environment:
Degree (or higher) in environmental science, engineering, geoscience or a related field
Chartered status with IEMA (or equivalent), or actively working towards this
8+ years of environmental experience gained in offshore oil & gas, CCS, or another high-hazard industry
Proven experience securing environmental approvals for complex offshore developments in the UK
Solid understanding of the UK offshore regulatory regime, including environmental permitting and engagement with OPRED and statutory consultees
Experience managing contractors and delivering complex environmental scopes
Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholders
Ability to prioritise competing demands and work flexibly in a fast-moving, evolving project environment
Desirable:
Experience applying or interpreting UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) requirements in the context of CCS projects
Behaviours
We value people who:
Take ownership and drive outcomes, even when the path is not fully defined
Build positive relationships and influence without authority
Communicate clearly and confidently, adapting to different audiences
Stay pragmatic and solutions-focused when navigating regulatory and technical complexity
Work collaboratively across teams, disciplines and partner organisations
Remain adaptable and resilient in a first-of-a-kind project environment
Why join our team?
This is more than just a project role, it is an opportunity to shape a new industry and contribute directly to the UK’s net zero future.
At bp, we offer an open and inclusive culture where you can bring your full self to work. We support flexible ways of working and value a healthy work-life balance. You will have access to learning and development opportunities to grow your career, alongside a competitive benefits package including life and health insurance, medical care, and more.
Most importantly, you will be part of a team delivering something with real impact, building infrastructure that will transform how industries decarbonise for decades to come.
