As a Senior Rolling Stock Engineer, you will have the opportunity to influence how new fleets are designed, introduced, and maintained, ensuring they meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and efficiency.
In this role, you’ll work with a diverse range of stakeholders, including train operators, rolling stock owners, government bodies, and manufacturers. You’ll contribute to projects that define technical specifications for new trains, evaluate cutting-edge technologies such as battery and hydrogen propulsion, and develop strategies for fleet management and depot design. Your expertise will help deliver solutions that are affordable, deliverable, and future-ready, supporting decarbonisation goals and improving passenger experience.
You won’t just be part of a team—you’ll be a trusted advisor, a problem solver, and a technical leader. From overseeing design reviews and tender evaluations to managing testing and commissioning processes, your work will have a direct impact on the success of major rail projects. You’ll also collaborate with Jacobs’ global network of experts in the USA, Canada, Australia, and across the UK, giving you exposure to international best practices and innovative approaches.

- Proven experience in introducing new rolling stock or maintaining existing fleets.
- Strong knowledge of rail vehicles and systems from experience with a consultant, manufacturer, operator, or infrastructure manager.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
- Understanding of modern rolling stock systems and willingness to learn emerging technologies.
- Ability to lead tasks or work as a key team member, with strong customer focus.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills.
- Strategic mindset with problem-solving ability, adaptability, and resilience.
- Degree/HNC or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar.
- Ability to travel within the UK, Ireland, and internationally as required.
