As part of the Local Plans & Strategic Development function, you will:

Shape the strategic direction of place making across Hertfordshire, ensuring transport is fully integrated into long term growth.

Work at the centre of cross boundary planning, collaborating with district and borough councils, National Highways, neighbouring authorities, Homes England, and others.

Influence Local Plans and emerging strategic frameworks, ensuring new developments deliver sustainable, accessible, and future proofed transport outcomes.

Contribute to preparing for a new era of countywide strategic planning, supporting evidence, spatial options, and long term development strategies.

Help deliver government growth targets responsibly, balancing economic ambition with environmental resilience, efficient movement, and great place quality.

Work closely with large developments through PPAs and Pre applications, from site promotion, master planning, and detailed planning applications.

Join a supportive team that values innovation, practical problem solving, and proactive engagement with partners.

Here's what you'll need

We are looking for candidates who bring a solid foundation in planning, transport, or place‑making, supported by the right blend of technical knowledge, strategic thinking and people skills.

A relevant degree such as Geography, Planning, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.

Strong relationship‑building capability with a good awareness of urban, transport, highway or spatial planning.

Credible understanding of local plans, urban planning principles, place‑making, and national policy frameworks such as the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

A good understanding of the full planning process, including development management.

We welcome applicants from across the planning and place‑making world who want to broaden their skills and influence strategy at a larger scale. You may come from backgrounds such as town planning, transport planning, urban design or master planning, infrastructure planning, regeneration, or policy and growth strategy.

Please note , the role will require 2 day office attendance in Stevenage.
