Every day, thousands of people rely on Scotland's bridges to get where they need to be. As South East Scotland Bridges Manager, you'll be the leader responsible for ensuring that some of the country's most vital transport assets remain safe, resilient, and fit for the future.
Managing more than 850 structures across the South East trunk road network—including complex and nationally significant bridges—you'll drive major maintenance, strengthening, refurbishment, and renewal programmes that keep Scotland moving.
This is a role with genuine influence. You'll lead strategic investment decisions, shape maintenance programmes worth millions of pounds, and guide multidisciplinary teams through the full lifecycle of bridge schemes—from investigation and design through to construction and handover.
Your leadership won't just maintain infrastructure. It will protect communities, improve network reliability, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
About the Opportunity
You'll lead the South East Bridges Team, providing leadership across our South Queensferry, Stepps, and Bonnyrigg offices.
Working at the heart of the trunk road network, you'll oversee the identification, investigation, design, procurement, and construction management of bridge maintenance schemes across a diverse portfolio of structures.
You'll be responsible for:
- Leading multidisciplinary teams delivering bridge maintenance and rehabilitation projects
- Managing consultants, contractors, and specialist supply chain partners
- Overseeing bridge assessments, strengthening schemes, refurbishment projects, and bearing replacement works
- Driving technical excellence through design approvals, certification, and compliance with standards
- Leading tender evaluations and supporting contract awards
- Ensuring the highest standards of safety, environmental performance, and quality
- Working closely with Transport Scotland and internal stakeholders to minimise network disruption and maximise value
- Acting as Principal Designer or Principal Contractor where required
- Supporting the delivery of record bridge maintenance investment programmes

If you're motivated by meaningful work, major infrastructure challenges, and the opportunity to lead from the front, this role offers all three.
- Educated to degree level in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Extensive experience in the assessment, design and maintenance of highway bridge structures.
- Professional qualifications and membership of an appropriate professional body (CEng and MICE or MIStructE)
- A full approved UK driving licence.
- Skilled in the project management of schemes and the management of teams
