The Position

Scientist in Translational Medicine, Ophthalmology

The Opportunity:

We are offering the opportunity to join our cutting-edge Ophthalmology Translational Medicine Group. We are looking for a highly motivated Translational Medicine Scientist specializing in ophthalmic biomarker strategy with deep subject matter expertise in ophthalmology. Proven matrix leader adept at bridging preclinical discovery and early clinical development in retinal and anterior segment diseases.

Your roles & responsibilities

  • Bridging the gap between the lab and the clinic: Act as a core member of the Ophthalmology Precision Medicine Team leading portfolio enabling fluid- and imaging biomarker strategies.

  • Drive assigned translational medicine activities, including deep understanding of different data types required in early development (biomarker, imaging, omics, preclinical, clinical), analyzing it, and using the insights for portfolio enablement.

  • Partner with other departments like Pharmaceutical Sciences, Therapeutic Modalities, Computational Sciences, Product Development, and Biostatistics across the company to support future Ophthalmology programs.

  • Perform literature searches to inform scientific and clinical strategies, ensure data interpretation is evidence-based, and stay updated with advancements in molecular, imaging, and functional biomarker assessments.

  • Perform data analyses of molecular, ocular imaging, and clinical trial data to inform decision making and reverse translation to other portfolio programs

  • Contribute to the preparation and writing of scientific papers, reports, and presentation materials to facilitate communications of scientific and clinical findings internally and externally.

  • Collaborate with academic institutions, internal and external key opinion leaders, subject matter experts, and service providers to support preclinical and clinical studies in relevant ophthalmic diseases

Who you are:

  • M.D., Ph.D or PharmD in a relevant field (e.g., Ophthalmology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences or related discipline).

  • Proven experience in academic research, pharmaceutical industry or in a clinical setting, with a demonstrated track record of impactful contributions, supported by a strong scientific publication record.

  • Solid understanding of methodological and bioanalytical approaches, with the proficiency to contribute to the integration and interpretation of pre-clinical and clinical data to support proof of biology, efficacy, and safety assessments.

  • Expertise in the Ophthalmology field: deep understanding of ocular cell biology and physiology, including the etiopathological mechanisms of the most relevant ophthalmic conditions (e.g. nAMD, DME, DR, iAMD/GA). Experience in drug development for Ophthalmology is a plus.

  • Demonstrated scientific curiosity and passion to drive projects and innovate, with the ability to take initiative and suggest new ideas.

  • Proven experience working in cross-functional, matrix teams, with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.

  • Goal-oriented and highly motivated, with an analytical mindset and the ability to distill complex issues into actionable solutions.

  • Outstanding organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex scientific ideas in a concise and accessible manner.

  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken).

Role available in Welwyn, UK (occasional travels to Basel, Switzerland required).

Your responsibilities will be tailored to your experience level.
